Evaluation Process

Alaska Neuro Associates, LLC, offers neuropsychological, psychological, and forensic assessments of children six years and older, adolescents, and adults of all ages. These assessments evaluate a person’s intellectual ability, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and/or problems with mood, behaviour and functioning.

What to expect at your appointment:

Arrive 30 minutes BEFORE your scheduled appointment. We will use this time to verify your demographic information, scan in your insurance card and photo ID, and make sure any unanswered questions on your history questionnaire are completed. EVERYONE who is planning to be present for the interview portion of the evaluation should be present at check in. Arriving more than 10 minutes late for your appointment could be considered the basis for the appointment to be treated as a no show and for fees to be assessed

The first hour of the evaluation will be spent in an interview session with the doctor. The information you provided in the history questionnaire will be used by the Neuropsychologist during the interview to better focus their time and attention on your specific concerns. It is extremely important that a reliable historian is present during the interview of a patient with memory issues. Caregivers, case managers, and clinicians are valuable sources of information and contribute to the thoroughness of the interview. A parent or legal guardian must accompany all children under the age of 18. Stepparents are welcome to accompany the parent or legal guardian but cannot take the place of a parent or legal guardian. Please keep in mind that we are looking for the person with the most knowledge of the patient’s issues to be present in the interview.

After the interview the patient will begin testing with the psychometrist, a trained professional who administers and scores neuropsychological tests under the supervision of a Neuropsychologist, while the parent, guardian or other attendee completes a set of rater forms. The duration of the testing process varies based on the nature of the referral question and the complexity of the patient’s situation. The testing typically takes between four to six hours. It is important to complete the all of the testing and self reports in the same day if at all possible. You should not schedule other appointments or plan to be elsewhere in case the testing runs long. Please note: the psychometrist cannot provide you with any information about your test results or diagnosis. That information will be available during the feedback session.

Patients are given breaks and snacks periodically during the course of the testing process. It is required that parents and legal guardians of patients under the age of 18 or who are severely impaired, remain in our office throughout testing. The psychometrist will release the patient to their parent or guardian during breaks in testing. We have a number of snacks and beverages available to patients, but if there are any dietary restrictions or food allergies you will want to bring something you know the patient can have.

Feedback sessions are typically scheduled 3-4 weeks after the evaluation process has been completed. Feedback appointments last about an hour and provide an opportunity for the patient and those who care for the patient, to learn the results of the testing, the diagnosis and recommendations we have for the patient. We believe that a critical component of the evaluation process is meeting with patients to discuss their testing results, using understandable language, which gives them an opportunity to ask questions and clarify issues. This also provides us the opportunity to actively seek their input to enhance or refine our recommendations.

Our final report provides a pathway to help each person achieve their optimal level of functioning. We will provide copies of the report to the patient, referral source and anyone listed to receive information from us on the ROI, after the feedback session. Due to frequency limitations imposed by insurance companies and our own scheduling limitations we are not able to schedule additional feedback appointments. Everyone who has a need to discuss the report with the doctor should attend the feedback session.
